Reaction Injection Molding (RIM, also named Low-Pressure Injection Molding) is an ideal process to low volume manufacturing the large plastic parts quickly and economically. Firstly, the liquid bi-component polyurethanes are injected into a mixer at certain amount ratio and meanwhile mixed well by the mixer, then the mixture is injected into the tooling cavity quickly at room temperature and low pressure to form the parts.

 

This was an Engine Casing that was originally manufactured by the sheet metal fabrication with lots of welding. To save cost, customer modified the design of this casing to be Reaction Injection Molded. The different wall thicknesses of 5/7/10/20 mm brought challenge to shrinkage control.

Reaction Injection Molding Process Steps:

Mixing: two liquid polyurethanes are mixed together in a mixer at certain amount ratio.

Injection: the mixed liquid polyurethanes are injected into mold cavity under low pressure and room temperature.

Reaction: The liquid mixture reacts and cures inside the mold cavity and forms a solid part.

Demolding: The solid part is manually taken out from the mold cavity.

 

One advantage of RIM is its ability to produce large parts with a smooth and high-quality surface finishing, as well as the complex geometries and intricate details. Another advantage of RIM is its ability to produce parts with high strength and durability, which makes RIM parts ideal for applications that durability is a critical factor, such as industries of automotive, medical devices, aerospace, etc.

Industry Applications:
RIM is commonly used in the low volume manufacturing or prototyping of automotive, aerospace, medical devices, and consumer goods parts. Such as automotive bumpers & grills, body panels, interior components, aerospace ducting, large enclosures, big housings and medical covering shells.

 

One shot of injection molding time was around 40 seconds. More big size and volume of the part, More time of the reaction injection molding. Insert Molding and Overmolding were also feasible for our RIM process. 4 stainless steel M6 nuts were inserted for injection molding.

The high pressures used cause the plastic to conform to the mold’s shape, thereby generating the part. Like metal die casting, custom plastic injection molding typically produces components that require little or no additional work. Reaction Injection Molding (RIM) is a specialized subset of the injection molding technique that chemically bonds two or more plastics into a polymer before they are introduced into the mold.

 

The high strength of our RIM parts had our RIM process low volume manufactured the large shell parts properly, economically and quickly. The finished RIM parts for delivery. The parts were packaged economically and safely to be delivered by cheap sea freight that took around 25 days.
